Somatic coaching

You already know a lot about what is going on with you. The body knows a different part of it, and it usually says so first: the breath that stops when a certain subject comes up, the shoulders that climb before a hard conversation. Somatic coaching is where we listen to that part together.

What it is

I trained in Hakomi, a mindfulness-based, body-centered method. In a session we slow things down enough that you can notice what your body does while you are with a question, a decision, a relationship. I might ask you to notice what happens when you hear a certain sentence, or to let a gesture finish instead of cutting it off. The noticing is gentle, you are in charge of the pace, and nothing has to be explained to be real.

This is coaching, not therapy. I do not diagnose or treat. What I do is sit with you while you find out, in your own body, what you actually want and what has been in the way.

Who it is for

How a session goes

  1. We arrive

A few minutes of settling. Where you are today, what is alive, what you would like to look at. No forms, no intake script.

  2. We slow down and notice

With your eyes open or closed, I offer small things to notice: a sentence, a posture, a breath. You report what happens. We follow what shows up, not a plan.

  3. We let it land

Whatever came up gets room to settle. We talk about what you noticed and what, if anything, you want to carry into the week. Sessions run about an hour.

Questions people ask

Is somatic coaching therapy?

No. I am a coach, not a licensed therapist, and I do not diagnose or treat conditions. Coaching works with what is happening in your body and your life right now, in the present tense. If what you are carrying needs a therapist, I will say so and help you find one.

What is Hakomi?

Hakomi is a mindfulness-based, body-centered method developed by Ron Kurtz. Instead of analyzing a problem, we slow down and notice what your body does while you are with it: where you tense, where you lean, what you hold back. That noticing, done gently and with company, is where change starts.

Does it involve touch?

Only if you want it to, and only after we have talked about it. Plenty of sessions involve no touch at all. Online sessions, obviously, never do.

In person or online?

Both. In-person sessions are in Pittsburgh. Online sessions work well for this kind of work because the attention is on your experience, not on a technique I need to be in the room for.

What if I do not know what I feel?

That is the most common place to start. Not knowing is information, and the body usually knows before the words do. We go at the pace that lets you notice.

How much does it cost?

The first 20-minute call is free, and nothing about it obliges you to continue. We talk about session rates on that call.
